March 2013 saw the site at Newton of Fortrie become operational. Muirden Energy welcomed the news after a delayed start due to severe weather conditions. Three, 2.3 megawatt turbines were submitted to Aberdeenshire Council in 2009 by local consultants Greencat Renewables. The site was then approved unanimously by the Formartine Area Committee in November 2010.
Local contractors Davidson Plant Hire started civil work on the site in October 2012 with Lovies Ltd supplying concrete for the turbine bases in December. Electrical work was carried out by Prelec, and began at the end of 2012. Scottish and Southern Energy were responsible for ensuring the site was connected to the national grid on 30th March 2013.
Muirden Energy’s construction manager, Kevin Burns, oversaw all site supervision to ensure everything was completed on time. The site will generate approximately 19,342MW/h, powering up to 3947 homes.
